Pre-Marital Counselling

Prepare/Enrich (Optional)
The Prepare/Enrich Marriage and Relationship Assessment Tool is a widely researched pre-marital and marriage assessment tool that highlights your relationship strengths and growth areas. Each individual completes an online questionnaire during the course of therapy which will be used to inform specific points of discussion. Pre-marital counselling using the Prepare/Enrich Tool usually takes 4 sessions.

Additional Fee: Using the Prepare/Enrich tool will involve an additional one-time fee of $46 AUD which can be paid directly to Prepare/Enrich when accessing the questionnaire.

Whilst the Prepare/Enrich questionnaire is a structured way of going through a number of different relationship areas, it is not a necessity. You are always welcome to engage in couples therapy without the questionnaire if you wish.

Q. What should I expect of pre-marital counselling?

At your initial session, some time will be spent understanding your agenda and goals for therapy, gathering information about your current relationship and its history, any concerns and difficulties, and each of your attachment histories.

If you would like to use the Prepare/Enrich tool, the online questionnaires will then be sent to each of you to fill out independently between sessions. The following sessions will go through your strengths and growth areas based off the questionnaire.

Q. How many sessions will we need?

Pre-marital counselling using the Prepare/Enrich Tool usually takes 4 sessions. It is up to you as a couple if you would like further or fewer sessions.

Q. When is couples counselling NOT recommended?

There are a few instances where couples counselling would not be appropriate. These instances include:

  • When there is domestic violence or current abuse in the relationship

  • When either partner is struggling with a current addiction

  • When there is an active or ongoing affair that is not welcome by the other partner

For couples therapy to be effective, there needs to be a sense of emotional safety to build upon. In the situations above, the recommendation would be to first seek out individual therapy, and then afterwards consider couples therapy.

Q. Can I access rebates?

Please note that couples therapy is currently not rebatable by Medicare. If you would like to access rebates you can check with your private health insurance provider.
